The WILTGUARD variety is a historical American strawberry variety. In modern practice, it is practically not encountered as an independent crop for commercial cultivation; however, it is widely known as an important genetic material in breeding programs.
A key characteristic of the variety is its genetic resistance to Fusarium wilt caused by the pathogen Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. fragariae. Studies confirm that this variety possesses specific resistance genes, including the FW3 gene on the first chromosome.
Breeders actively use WILTGUARD as a parent line to pass on resistance genes to root and vascular diseases to offspring. The variety is present in the pedigrees of many modern popular strawberry varieties.
