The Douglas variety (original breeding number C51) was developed at the University of California. Prior to the introduction of the Chandler variety, it was the primary variety for winter plantings in the southern coastal regions of California.

The plant belongs to early-maturing strawberry varieties. The variety is characterized as high-yielding, large-fruited, and possessing good taste qualities.
