The variety was bred in Italy as part of the C.I.V. breeding program. During comparative trials conducted in Denmark and Great Britain, the variety's yield and performance were compared to the Sella variety, with Gardena showing a smaller average berry size.

Trial results in Denmark (1997–1998) characterized the variety as susceptible to powdery mildew. British trial reports from 1995 indicated that the variety has no significant advantages over existing standards.
