Variety description

10 August 2026

Delfos group varieties were bred in the USA by Delta Experiment Station breeders based on the Foster population, derived from a cross between Sunflower and Triumph varieties. Lines of this group, including Delfos 631, 6102, 531 and 9169, were actively distributed for breeding use in various countries.

Plants of this type were described as short, spreading, with light foliage, which facilitated sunlight access to the bolls. The varieties were characterized by very early ripening, which helped reduce damage from the boll weevil. Productivity was high with a fiber turnout of 33–35%.

The staple length of the fiber in varieties of this group ranged from 29 to 30 mm. Despite valuable economic traits in the first half of the 20th century, modern studies indicate a lack of specific resistance of these varieties to soil salinity.
