Sure-Grow 501 belongs to the species Gossypium hirsutum L. and is characterized as an early-maturing variety. During the 1990s, it was widely distributed and used as a standard for productivity and fiber quality in field and university trials. The variety possessed good general combining ability for fiber characteristics, with the exception of micronaire.
In agronomic studies, the variety was monitored for susceptibility to pathogens such as Verticillium wilt and pests, including thrips. Responses of the variety to the application of growth regulators, such as paclobutrazol, for plant height management were also studied.
In modern breeding, the variety is used as a "vintage" object for comparative analysis with new hybrids. Scientists use it to assess changes in morphological traits, such as boll distribution, and to study the results of breeding over the last decades.
The variety is listed in the national registry — its seeds are authorized for sale in this country.
