The S. Omero variety is classified as mid-ripening and is characterized by later flowering compared to wild populations, which extends the vegetative growth period and contributes to an increase in forage mass yield.
The plant is a biennial or perennial herb with a powerful taproot system, succulent stems, and leaves that are pubescent on the underside. The variety is adapted to moderately acidic and alkaline soils, but does not tolerate waterlogging or salinization.
The crop is used for hay, silage, or grazing, both in pure stands and in forage mixtures. The tannin content in the plant prevents rumen bloat in ruminant animals.
