The plant is a dwarf herbaceous perennial with well-branched stems, ranging in height from 0.4 to 1.0 meters. The leaves have a characteristic lobed shape inherited from the parent species H. coccineus.
Flowers approximately 15 cm in diameter bloom from July to September; a second wave of flowering is possible if faded shoots are pruned. The above-ground part of the plant dies back for the winter, with shoots regrowing from the root in spring. The variety has high winter hardiness, but requires root system protection during severe frosts.
