The Amsel variety (also known as Heines Amsel) was bred in Germany and was actively used in breeding programs during the first half of the XX century. It gained fame due to its resistance to the pathogen Erysiphe graminis, which made it a significant object for comparative trials of that period.
This barley was classified as a malting variety. Beyond agricultural cultivation, it served as basic material for genetic research into DNA composition and inheritance mechanisms of disease resistance traits. In the 1960s and 1970s, the variety began to be replaced by more modern breeding achievements and ceased to be used in commercial production.
