The variety is a winter six-row barley. The Dea variety participated in the pedigree of the variety, and Barbo itself was later used for breeding other varieties, in particular Brunhild.
The variety possesses resistance to barley yellow mosaic virus (BaYMV), which was of great importance for protecting crops in the absence of chemical control methods for the disease. The variety also possesses specific resistance to powdery mildew.
