The BOMI variety is a genetic standard or control 'wild type' applied in laboratory experiments for the study of plant physiology, mutagenesis, and hordein protein analysis. It is closely associated with the Risø research center in Denmark and served as the basis for the development of a number of high-lysine mutant barley lines.
Unlike commercial varieties, BOMI does not have a standard description of agronomic characteristics, such as maturity group, stem height, or lodging resistance indices. Its primary value lies in the stability of its genotype, which allows it to be used as a parent form for comparative studies of grain composition, starch, and enzymes.
