The variety is a two-row spring barley that was used as a classic European malting variety in the mid-20th century. In modern agronomy and science, it is known primarily as a genetic standard and parental form for studying the composition of proteins, starch, and mutation induction.
In experimental programs, the variety often acts as a control susceptible sample in studies of resistance to pathogens, in particular to powdery mildew. It served as the basis for the creation of a number of well-known mutant lines used in breeding processes.
