The Forester barley variety was characterized by high yield and good ability to resist lodging. In 1991, it was noted that the variety was little used in the malting trade, so its breeding potential was assessed primarily for seed producers.
The plant possessed good resistance to powdery mildew and brown rust, but showed weak resistance to leaf blotch. The variety was included in the NIAB recommended list in the UK until 1995.
