The variety belongs to the mid-season group; its growing season lasts from 76 to 85 days. The plant is characterized by medium height and a loose cylindrical spike. The grain has an oval-elliptical shape, is large in size, and has a thousand kernel weight in the range of 46–56 g.
Gunnar is resistant to lodging, as well as to Helminthosporium blight, covered smut, and a number of foliar diseases, with moderate drought tolerance. The variety is susceptible to loose smut. Based on quality characteristics, it belongs to the valuable varieties with a crude protein content of 12–14%.
