The variety was obtained by the method of individual selection from a local variety of barley grown on the island of Gotland. Breeding work was carried out by the Swedish Seed Association in Svalöv.
Gullkorn is a typical representative of early 20th-century barleys. Currently, it belongs to the landrace category and is maintained in genetic collections, such as NordGen, for the purpose of maintaining biodiversity and studying adaptability to difficult weather conditions.
