The variety is of the six-row barley type. In the Finnish classification system of the 1980s, it was intended for cultivation in zones I–III.
The purpose of the variety includes use as feed barley, although documentation from that period also classifies it as a malting variety. In scientific literature, Hankkijan Pokko is mentioned in studies on protein composition and the resistance of barley lines to Fusarium head blight.
