The variety originates from the Hana region in Moravia and was historically valued for its high grain quality characteristics suitable for brewing. It is a two-row barley and was widely used as genetic material for the breeding of subsequent commercial varieties.
As a landrace, Hanna is inferior to modern intensive varieties in terms of resistance to lodging and diseases. In modern scientific literature, it is more often mentioned as a control sample or a source of valuable genes for breeding work rather than as a variety for mass cultivation.
