Maris canon is a two-row barley that is frequently found in the pedigrees of other breeding lines. The variety is used as genetic material and a classic model ("historical accession") for scientific work, in particular in research on root architecture and haploid breeding.
In genetic databases, the variety is characterized by the presence of resistance alleles to powdery mildew Erysiphe graminis f. sp. hordei, including the Mla6 and Mig genes. At the same time, in comparative trials, its susceptibility to certain types of rust was noted. The variety is classified as feed or breeding material and is not used in modern commercial catalogs.
