The Priora variety is a hulless barley in which the floral glumes separate from the caryopsis during threshing. This allows the grain to be used for food purposes without additional polishing. The variety is purposefully used in breeding programs to create healthy food products and nutraceuticals.

The grain of the variety is distinguished by a high content of β-glucans and lutein. Studies have also been conducted to examine antioxidants in it, such as phenolic acids, anthocyanins, and flavonoids. In comparative scientific trials of various barley genotypes, Priora is often used as a control or typical sample for assessing biochemical composition.
