The GISELA 5 rootstock exerts a restrictive effect on tree size, which reaches approximately 50–60% of the dimensions on standard vigorous rootstocks. The root system of the trees requires the installation of supports in the first 3–5 years after planting due to insufficient independent stability.
The plant is demanding regarding growing conditions, requires rich, well-drained soils, and is sensitive to water deficit, therefore it requires irrigation. The rootstock possesses moderate resistance to bacterial canker and viral diseases, but is sensitive to Phytophthora; root suckers are absent.
The use of this rootstock contributes to high productivity and fruit quality. When the tree is overloaded with the crop, fruit size may decrease, which makes competent agrotechnics and, if necessary, crop thinning essential.
