Variety description

The VSL-2 (Krymsk 5) rootstock is an interspecific hybrid. It is used primarily for the cultivation of sweet cherry, sour cherry, and ornamental plants. Trees grafted onto this rootstock reach a height of 2.5–3 meters, which is about 50% of the growth of trees on sweet cherry or mahaleb cherry seedlings.
The plant possesses high winter hardiness of the root system, withstanding temperature drops to -12...-14°C, and drought tolerance. The rootstock is well adapted to heavy, compacted, and waterlogged soils, and its root system shows resistance to a complex of soil-borne pathogens, including nematodes, Verticillium wilt, and bacteriosis.
Grafted trees enter production in the 2nd–3rd year after planting, demonstrating high productivity and commercial fruit quality. A powerful fibrous root system ensures reliable tree anchorage in the soil, preventing lodging.
