The plant is a dense, rounded shrub 1.2–1.5 m in height and about 1 m in width. Dark green, broad-ovate leaves with serrated edges change color to a distinct wine-red by autumn. The inflorescences are 15–22 cm in diameter and have a flat, corymbose shape.

Flowers consist of small fertile ones in the center and large sterile ones along the edge, colored in a saturated wine-red. The color of the inflorescences depends on the soil acidity. Flowering occurs on the previous year's shoots from July to autumn. The variety requires winter cover, corresponding to USDA hardiness zone 6.

The plant is used in single and group plantings, borders, and container gardening. Known under the synonyms Rotschwanz, Redstart, Roter Schwanz, Красный Хвост, Красная Звезда and Красный Старт.
