The plant reaches 2–3 meters in height and can grow as a small tree with peeling bark. The leaves are large, up to 20 cm, oval-shaped, pointed, smooth on top, pubescent on the bottom, with reddish petioles.

The inflorescences, approximately 20 cm in diameter, have a pleasant fragrance. During the flowering process, the marginal flowers change color from an initial light yellow-green to cream, and then to red.

The variety is very winter-hardy and is used in landscape gardening. It prefers partial shade and acidic or neutral soils.
