The name Hydrangea hortensis is historically an obsolete synonym for the species Hydrangea macrophylla and does not designate a specific cultivar.

The cultivar Hortensis belongs to the species Hydrangea involucrata. It is a low-growing shrub up to 50 cm in height with double flowers gathered in loose inflorescences, the color of which varies from pink to creamy white.
