The plant is an evergreen shrub or small tree with a moderate growth rate and an upright pyramidal crown. Leaves are large, lanceolate, serrated, with sharp spines, and have a variegated coloration: a dark green background combined with a bright yellow center or spots.
The variety is female and requires the presence of a male pollinator plant for fruiting. It blooms in May–June with small white flowers, and by September, glossy red drupes ripen, which persist on the branches during the winter period. At 10 years of age, the height reaches 2.5 m, with maximum dimensions up to 6 meters in height and 5 meters in width.
The plant is winter hardy in zones 6b–8b, prefers conditions ranging from full sun to partial shade, and requires moderate watering. Originally discovered as a mutation of the Alaska variety. All parts of the plant, including leaves and fruits, are toxic to humans.
