Variety description

The plant is an evergreen large shrub or small tree. The leaves are dark green, glossy, leathery, and have less pronounced and less sharp spines on the edges than the typical species, making them less prickly. The variety is a female specimen and, in the presence of a male pollinator, bears abundant bright red berries that persist on the branches for a long time.

It grows slowly; the height of an adult plant after 10 years can reach 3.5–4 meters, with the final height varying from 6 to 12 meters depending on conditions. The variety possesses increased winter hardiness and is used as a solitary plant, in group plantings, for creating hedges and topiary forms, as it tolerates pruning well.

The fruits of the Ilex aquifolium are poisonous.
