Halkis is a compact bulbous plant 10–15 cm tall with narrow, sword-shaped, gray-green leaves resembling grasses. The medium-sized flowers are fragrant, and their color varies from sky-blue to dark, almost black, with a characteristic yellow spot on the lower perianth lobes.
The plant is early-flowering, with the flowering period occurring in February–March. The variety has winter hardiness in USDA zones 5–9 and prefers sunny sites with good drainage and moderately moist soil. In gardening, it is used for group plantings and for landscaping rock gardens.
