The variety belongs to the Dutch iris group. The plant is a bulbous perennial possessing erect linear leaves. The flowers of the variety are characterized by blue-white coloration.

The name Delft Blue is also used to designate varieties of Dutch hyacinth (Hyacinthus orientalis) and English iris (Iris latifolia), which requires verification of the Latin species name when purchasing planting material to ensure correct agronomic practices.
