Varieties of the Geisenheim group (the most well-known are 139, 26, and 120) were selected in the Rheingau region for cultivation in various climatic conditions, including mountainous terrain up to 700 m above sea level. Trees of these varieties possess varying vigor and crown shapes, ranging from compact to vigorous.

Characteristic features of the varieties are late bud break and resistance to diseases and low temperatures. The fruits vary in size and shell thickness: from thin-shelled varieties with easy cracking to large-fruited forms with a good kernel yield. Most varieties in this group are self-fertile.
