The variety was developed by specialists of the Liaoning Institute of Economic Forest in China. It was obtained as a result of interspecific crossing of the Xinzhipi variety (Juglans regia) with the heartnut (Juglans cordiformis).
In international documentation, the variety is noted as having a late leaf-flushing time. In scientific literature, Hanfeng is mentioned mainly in the context of genetic research, analysis of the fatty acid composition in the kernel, and assessment of product quality within the framework of Chinese breeding programs.
