Hartley trees are characterized by moderate vigor and form an extensive canopy. Bearing occurs on the tips of shoots, which causes the variety to enter production later than modern lateral-bearing varieties.

The nuts are large, oval-shaped, flattened at the base and pointed at the tip. The thin shell is tightly sealed, with a kernel yield of 41–44%. The kernel is light-colored, of excellent quality, and fills the shell cavity well.

The variety is intended for commercial production of in-shell nuts and is often used as a pollinator for other varieties. The crop is susceptible to walnut blight.
