The Payne variety was historically used in the industrial nut farming of the USA and is considered promising for cultivation in a number of European countries, for example, in Italy.
The variety was actively used in breeding programs as a parent form. In particular, the Chandler variety was obtained at the University of California, Davis, by crossing the Payne variety with a French variety.
