The variety belongs to the butterhead lettuce group. It forms a head with tender leaves that acquire a reddish-brown hue due to high anthocyanin content, while the inner part of the head remains light. The seeds of the variety are white.
The variety is considered an heirloom, developed by a gardener from Geneva. It is known by various names depending on the region: Brauner Trotzkopf in Germany and Grosse brune têtue in France. It is used primarily for summer cultivation, and less frequently grown as a winter variety.
