The plant belongs to the romaine lettuce group and reaches a height of 50–60 cm during the flowering period. A characteristic feature is the formation of a robust stem with a diameter of up to 5–7 cm, which retains a tender consistency for a long time. The leaves are grey-green in color, pointed in shape, and have a slight reddish tint along the edges.
The variety is resistant to adverse weather conditions. The stems, whose flavor profile resembles a combination of kohlrabi, cauliflower, and potato, are consumed boiled or stewed. Historically, the variety is associated with the North Hesse region and is classified as an heirloom vegetable variety.
