The plant is a compact evergreen perennial shrub 30 to 60 cm in height. The foliage is narrow, small, and grey-green or silver-green in color. The inflorescences are spicate, crowned with large bracts resembling butterfly wings, colored predominantly in purple tones.

The variety is early-flowering: flowering begins in April-May and continues until the end of summer; repeated autumn flowering is sometimes possible. The plant is sensitive to moisture stagnation, requiring good drainage to avoid rotting of the root system. Due to its Mediterranean origin, it requires cover or container cultivation in cold climate conditions.

It is used for decorative purposes for landscaping flower beds, garden borders, terraces, and balconies. The 'Anouk' variety is characterized by improved compactness and ornamental properties compared to wild forms of the species.
