The Barherta variety is a diploid form of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum ssp. non alternativum). It is a specialized forage crop created for achieving high productivity under intensive use.

The plant is characterized by late heading compared to similar varieties of this species. In official variety descriptions, the variety possesses resistance to lodging and a number of diseases, including rust, and also demonstrates winter hardiness indices typical for highly productive varieties of this type.
