The variety is a tetraploid Westerwold ryegrass, a type of Italian ryegrass. The plant is characterized by vigorous growth, flexibility, and hardiness, effectively filling gaps in the sward and used in crop rotations.

The improved version of the variety, Barspectra II, possesses high leafiness with broad leaves. The produce is characterized by good digestibility, high palatability, and a significant dry matter yield per hectare.
