The Mowester variety belongs to the species Lolium multiflorum and the variety Lolium westerwoldicum. The plant is a diploid and possesses the ability to very rapidly accumulate green mass, which makes it a typical mowing crop.

The variety is intended for use in forage production, including as part of multi-component grass mixtures for obtaining hay, haylage, or green fodder. The crop is demanding regarding soil structure and nutrient content, while the variety does not tolerate intensive livestock grazing well.
