Verdeal is not a breeding variety in the strict agronomic sense, but rather a folk selection maintained in genetic resource banks as valuable genetic material. This population possesses significant intra-population variability.

Plants of this agrotype are distinguished by a high tillering capacity. Due to the lack of standardization, clear quantitative indicators for height, disease resistance, or lodging are absent.

This plant material is used as a forage crop for local livestock needs. Studies of the population are aimed at assessing dry matter yield and forage quality in comparison with commercial varieties.
