The variety is synthetic and derived from six parental genotypes selected from the Victorian cultivar. It is characterized by a semi-erect growth habit and a pronounced ability for rapid regrowth after autumn rains.

The plant possesses increased disease resistance and good persistence. The variety is intended for pasture establishment and is focused on use in dairy, beef, and sheep farming.

A number of sources mention the Avalon PLUS variety, which differs from the original Avalon by a later heading date, improved sward density, and increased productivity.
