The Niagara variety is identified as a tetraploid (4x) perennial ryegrass, included in international variety lists and archival European registers.

In comparative studies of forage quality, the variety demonstrated a low acid detergent fiber (ADF) content. The variety was noted as highly productive when used for silage and providing good yields under grazing.
