The variety originated as a chance seedling in the Altes Land region before 1840. The tree has low to medium vigor, reaching a height of 3–4 meters, and forms a broad crown. It comes into bearing relatively late; yield is high but biennial.
Fruits are medium to large in size, having a flat-round, often irregular shape. The primary skin color is yellow-green with a striped reddish blush. The flesh is greenish-white, sweet-and-sour in taste. Harvesting maturity occurs at the end of October, consumer maturity from February; fruits are capable of being stored until June.
The variety is winter hardy and has low susceptibility to diseases. It is traditionally used as an apple for culinary processing and is also suitable for fresh consumption.
