The variety Mainapfel is recognized as one of many regional names for the apple Danziger Kantapfel, common in the southern German states. It is an ancient variety, first described in 1760, the exact origin of which remains unknown.

The fruits are classified as autumn, are medium-sized, and have a characteristic "angled" shape with pronounced ridges. The skin is shiny, covered with a waxy bloom, and colored from yellow-green to wine-red. The flesh is moderately juicy, slightly loose, and has a distinct aroma and a sweet-vinous taste.
