The variety represents a group of ancient local types distributed in Umbria, Tuscany, and Abruzzo. Historically, two types were distinguished: large-fruited and small-fruited. The name is associated with the shape of the fruit, which resembles a bread basket.
The fruits with an average weight of about 141 g have a round shape and smooth skin with a waxy bloom, a yellow-green ground color, and a dark purple blush. The flesh is tender, neither oily nor crisp, similar in texture to the Calville variety, and has a sweet-and-sour taste.
The plant is hardy and resistant to major diseases, including scab. Harvesting is carried out in September–October; the fruits are suitable for long-term winter storage. They are used for fresh consumption and culinary purposes and are of interest as a source of polyphenols.
