In old French pomological literature, the Violette variety is described as an apple tree named for the distinct taste and aroma of its flesh, which resembles a violet. In current catalogs, the variety is characterized by vigorous tree growth, a vertically spreading crown, and abundant fruiting.

The local variety Baguette Violette, common in the northern regions of France, is a late-maturing dessert variety. The fruits have a balance of sweetness and acidity, but are characterized by a short shelf life and are recommended for consumption within a few weeks after harvesting at the end of September.
