The alfalfa variety "Altfranken" (also known as "Altfranken-Schmidt" and "Altfranken-Steinbach") belongs to Medicago sativa. Historically, it was used as a forage crop and served as a standard of northern-type genetic material.
The variety shows tolerance to stem nematodes: despite the presence of signs of damage to seedlings, the plants retain the ability to form high yields. In the literature of the 1960s–70s, individual breeding lines or commercial seed names could have appeared under the specified names.
