The Romanian breeding variety Smarald belongs to the small-leaved or dwarf basil (Ocimum basilicum subsp. minimum) type. This plant with a compact growth habit, developed at the Vegetable Research and Development Station in Buzău, is used as an ornamental and aromatic crop.
The commercial variety Smarald, intended for indoor cultivation, is an annual plant reaching a height of up to 30 cm. It is distinguished by smooth glossy emerald-green leaves and an allspice aroma. The maturation period of this form is approximately 35 days; the plant is suitable for fresh consumption and drying.
