The name Bora denotes a collection of traditional sticky rice varieties (landraces) that are not the product of modern breeding. Within this group, there are many varieties, such as Aijung bora, Nol bora, and Malbhog bora, which share common culinary properties.

Plants of this group are often described as photoperiod-sensitive, tall, and late-maturing with a vegetation period of 150 to 180 days. Characteristics may vary depending on the specific variety and growing conditions.

The main feature of Bora rice is the high gelling capacity of the starch due to an amylopectin content of more than 95%. Traditionally, this rice is used for preparing festive dishes, desserts, and snacks, and it is also being researched in pharmaceuticals as a mucoadhesive matrix for drug delivery.
