Chinese Originario is not a single breeding variety but represents a group of introduced genetic lines that were imported into Italy in large quantities from Japan and China at the beginning of the 20th century. These varieties served as the base material for the development of many modern Italian rice varieties.

The plants belong to the japonica type. The grain has a short, rounded shape and a pearly color. Varieties of this group are distinguished by a high ability to absorb liquids and a soft texture, which is why in modern Italian classification this type of rice is intended for the preparation of soups, puddings, and desserts.
