The variety belongs to the japonica subspecies and is characterized as very early-maturing with a vegetation period of about 127 days. The grain of the variety is round, with an amylose content from 15.8 to 18.9%. Early studies noted the presence of a white core and the efforts of breeders to eliminate chalkiness.

The variety is traditionally cultivated in the Camargue region. Due to the good knowledge of its physiological characteristics, including response to anoxia and interaction with rhizobacteria, Cigalon often serves as a control sample in European scientific rice research.
