The variety belongs to the subspecies Oryza sativa ssp. japonica and is the first high-yielding semi-dwarf rice variety introduced into US breeding. The shortened stem provides the plant with high lodging resistance, which allows for the effective use of fertilizers to increase productivity.

The grain of this variety is characterized as long and possesses high technological parameters during processing. The variety was widely used in breeding as a parental form for the development of new commercial rice lines.
